From 31 May to 5 June 2011, the 17th European Championship in fly fishing was held in the area around Rožmberk nad Vltavou, attended by 17 teams, two of them Czech (men, ladies). The actual championship was preceded by the preparation of the championship teams that started to arrive from 21 May. According to the presumptions on paper, it was clear beforehand that this would be a duel for the gold medal between the home Czech team and France, leaving the others to battle for the bronze, especially in situations in which difficult venues were chosen for the competition, but with plenty of fish. According to tradition, both the Czechs and the French sent their B-teams to the European Championship. This was all supposed to play into the hands of the home favourites, who were supervised by a group of five international judges from Poland and Holland.

In the evening of Friday, April 1, 2011, the General Assembly of the International Fly Fisher Federation FIPS-Mou took place in Rome within the regular CIPS congress. We considered also our participation in Rome during the spring board meeting of the Fly Fishing Federation in Prague, but as the agenda of the General Assembly did not contain any essential items, we decided to render the participation at the GA to the CFU delegates to the CIPS congress for economical reasons.

From September 6 -12 of 2010, the 16th European Fly Fishing Championship took place near Banja Luka in Bosnia. There were 17 teams and 5 individuals registered. Four rivers were chosen for the competition - Sana, Sanica, Vrbas, Janj and Plivské Lake.
The Czech team consisting of Tomáš Starýchfojtů (captain), Martin Grün (manager) and competitors Jája Šram, Ivan Vančura, Luboš Roza, Filip Apjár and Roman Heimlich set off on Tuesday, 31. August with a several day head start so as to have enough time to get familiar with the local rivers and fish, and to try out the best tactics and lures.

When we obtained two gold medals last year on the World Championship at home – in Chotěboř (Czech team and Jindra Kalivoda), I was sure that next championship in Slovakia (2010) would be much more difficult. Possible defending of either of these two gold medals I therefore considered as big success. That is why we started preparations for the next championship already at the end of school holidays 2009. We made a dash for practice to Slovak rivers where the competition should be present with the group of potential junior representatives. We left out just Poprad river as it was not possible because of time. But training on the Belá and Váh rivers was very beneficial. Even the flows of both rivers were little changed after this year floods, during the Championship itself we could utilize a lot of knowledge from last year practice. In March we had a ground preparation yet, where we mainly tied, adjusted leaders and also learned something from the theory.

WHEN we hear that the 30th FIPS-Mouche World Fly Fishing Champs will be held on the mighty River San in Poland, we can’t wait to tackle this world famous river.
In reality, due to some of the worst storms and floods in Poland's history, the event becomes more of a battle against the elements rather than the fish themselves.
Hardy Greys Team England are Manager Ian Greenwood, Howard Croston, John Tyzack, Simon Robinson, Davie Parker and myself.
A total of 28 teams compete, making it the biggest World Championship ever.

At the southeasternmost tail of the Poland on the San river and distribution reservoir Myczkowce under the Solina lake already 30th World Flyfishing Championship took place this year. Czech team compounded of three very experienced competitors and two very young novices that it was first Championship for. Neither one of these novices went into the competition with zero international experience. The both have got over a lot of hard competitions not only at domestic waters. Roman Jörka (21 years) has started few times at Youth World Championship and he have represented at European Championship of Adults for two times. Pavel Chyba (25) was unfortunately off his luck that when he was ranked among the best juniors at Czech Republic, any World Championships of Juniors were not being held. But he also have represented at European Championship two times, where even he has obtained title of the European Champion last year at Ireland. It is not necessary to supply any information about above mentioned experienced standbys as the most of you probably knows what successes and medals they have reached at World and European Championships: Martin Drož and Antonín Pešek and Tomáš Adam. Captain of the Czech team also this year has been well known international Tomáš Starýchfojtů and the team manager has been Martin Musil.

The first trainings of my altogether fourth world championship were really hard for all, and we practically had nothing to follow, as the river was too high. In the first days we went practice only under the equalizing reservoir Myczkowce, where there were many other teams, or on the tributaries such as Solinka, Hoczewka and Oslawa, which was not really good and especially it was clear, based on news from Polish people that official trainings and competitions will be with low water. The practice in the lower San, upstream from the tributary of a little river Oslawa, where I did not catch any fish on the first practice day, but the guys did was really important for me, and thus I decided to repeat it the next day. Then, I caught there 3 big graylings and one them had fallen off that was great as almost nobody around caught anything.

After last year’s difficult nomination competition, I became a member of the Czech A- Team for the first time in my career. This time the World Championship took place in Poland. However, I was not the only newbie. There was also my colleague from our team in Jaroměř - Roman Jörka. The rest of our team were experienced experts such as Martin Drož, Antonin Pešek and Tomáš Adam. The team manager was Martin Musil and the team captain was Tomáš Starýchfojtů.
Before the championship we had a planned training in Poland, however, due to floods we had to cancel it. Even our departure to Poland was complicated by floods, however, even bigger ones. Despite all these problems we started our journey to Poland, and we looked forward to specific fishing experience. The competition water, the San river, was too high to fish in it, thus we had to fish in adjacent smaller rivers and the lake.

I created my first table of medals for countries and individuals based on medals from the World Championship before the “Czech Championship“ in Český Krumlov in 1996. Since this time I have extended these tables by tables of medals from European Championships and Youth Championships. For longer time I was thinking of making such an absolute chart of individuals based on positions in World Championships, but I never managed it due to two reasons. Of course, this was a lack of time and results from the beginning of competitions, which I am missing. The second problem, which disattracted me, was the question how to do it, because there were some who took part only once, but there are such experts who took part more than ten times.
